DD Direct DTH services, is the only FTA DTH in India and it presently has a total of 57 channels including 21 Doordarshan channels, some private channels and 21 channels of All India Radio. Prasar Bharti has planned to add 100 more channels by 31st Mar 2011 and provide up to 200 free to air tv channels by 31st Dec 2011.
The planning for increasing no of channels to 200 is done in response to growing popularity of DD DTH service and to fulfil the DD aim to have maximum viewership for providing coverage to as much population of the country as possible.
Currently, DD covers 88% of India’s geographical area and transmit all ‘Free to Air’ TV channels, some popular private entertainment TV channels and All India Radio to cater to the TV viewing requirements of populations residing in far-flung areas which are deprived of cable access. In fact, Prasar Bharati is also planning to add 148 new transmitters for expanding FM channels as FM radio is very popular and covers 35.74 percent of total population.

Consumers may not receive all the channels that are included in the list above as its depends on , Symbol rate, Type of Polarization, Transponder frequency and FEC Reception of each area. Every area has a separate range of reception and requires tuning to a particular frequency.
There are about 90 television channels in the queue that are waiting for being uploading on DD Direct Plus. This queue also includes some foreign channels including Deutsche Welle, Japan’s NHK TV and Korean Broadcasting Corporation. Some of the popular applicants are NDTV, NE TV Group, Sakshi TV, ZEE, IBN 7, TV 24, Sahara, and Star News. It is expected that ten more foreign channels would join the list soon.
